Glossy vs. Matte Film: It's All Personal Preference
Share
When it comes to DTF transfers, one of the most common questions we get is: should I use glossy or matte film? The honest answer? It's completely up to you — and that's actually a good thing.
What's the Difference?
Both glossy and matte films produce vibrant, durable DTF transfers, but they have a distinct look and feel once applied:
- Glossy film gives your transfers a shiny, high-contrast finish. Colors tend to pop more under light, and the surface has a smooth, polished look.
- Matte film produces a softer, flat finish with no shine. It has a more understated, premium feel — especially popular for apparel with a vintage or streetwear aesthetic.
Does One Last Longer Than the Other?
Nope. When applied correctly with the right heat and pressure settings, both glossy and matte transfers are equally durable. Wash resistance, adhesion, and longevity are determined by your press technique — not the film type.
Which One Should You Choose?
Here's a quick breakdown to help you decide:
- Choose glossy if you want bold, eye-catching designs that stand out — great for bright colors, photorealistic prints, and anything you want to really shine.
- Choose matte if you prefer a softer, more refined look — ideal for minimalist designs, dark garments, or brands going for a premium, low-key aesthetic.
The Bottom Line
There's no wrong answer here. Both finishes look incredible when applied properly. We recommend ordering a small batch of each and pressing a few test transfers to see which vibe fits your brand best. At the end of the day, it really does come down to personal preference — and that's what makes custom apparel so fun.
